Treated Wastewater Smell: The Investigation That Ruled Out the Biological System

Yes, treated wastewater can still smell bad even when the biological system is working well. We found this out the hard way. Everyone assumed the smell meant the bacteria were not working. They were wrong. The real cause was sitting downstream, in a place nobody checked first. This blog tells you exactly where we found it.


Why Does Treated Wastewater Still Smell?


This is a question that confuses many plant teams. “Water after treatment is supposed to be clean. So why does wastewater smell sometimes after being treated? The solution is easy. Treatment may not necessarily imply the smell is gone completely.


Most plants check BOD and COD numbers and feel happy. The numbers can be good. But cleaned water bad smell can still be present. This is due to the fact that pollution load and smell are not necessarily correlated. A tank can pass its BOD test and yet stink.

The Investigation: Checking Every Stage, One by One


We got a call from a food processing business concerning a strong treated wastewater smell. The crew over there had already blamed the biological tank. They assumed their bacteria had died, or ceased working out.


We assumed nothing. With a gas meter in hand we checked each stage one by one. Here’s what we found:

The biology was fine the whole time. The real problem was residual sulphide wastewater sitting quietly in the treated water storage tank. Nobody had checked that tank because nobody expected a smell after treatment.


Causes of Treated Wastewater Smell: What We Learned


But how does that smell come when the water has been completely treated? It comes down to some rather simple causes of odour in treated wastewater that are very easy to overlook:


  • Slow flow. Water sitting in the storage tank over long periods of time with minimal movement.

  • Low oxygen near the top of the tank even if the main treatment had plenty of oxygen.

  • Residual sulphide compounds not totally decomposed in treatment.

  • Heat. Heat speeds up the chemical reactions that generate smell.


Experts say the smell problems frequently occur after dissolved sulphide in water passes a specific level, even at modest levels. This means post treatment odour can still occur even if your main treatment figures look just great on paper. 


ETP Treated Water Quality Is About More Than Just Numbers


Many plants measure treated water quality using simply BOD, COD and TSS. These figures are important. But they don’t tell the full story. Smell is another matter and has to be checked separately.


A treated water storage tank odour might develop stealthily over days. The sulphide build-up can already be substantial before someone smells it. This is why regular odour checks (not just lab results) are vital for any plant dealing with high strength wastewater such as food, fish or starch processing waste.


WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE BLAMING THE BIOLOGY


If your treated water smells awful don't think your bacteria failed. Check your storage tank, your last pipe and anywhere water stands stationary for long periods of time. Usually the smell comes from after the biology, not the biology itself.
